In Ancient Greek mythology, Atlas was one of the Titans defeated by the Olympians. As punishment, he was appointed to hold aloft the heavens, becoming the pillar between the sky and the earth. He is the embodiment of endurance, never faltering in his strength or determination. Atlas is also known for bringing astronomy to mankind, therefore introducing the magic and wonder of the stars and galaxies to us on Earth.

During some very hard times in my life, I designed this shawl to be a simple and easy meditative project. The stitch pattern is easy and rhythmic, and the optional beading represents the glimmers of hope and brightness in the world – starting out sporadic, but eventually glistening on each and every picot along the bound off edge. During Atlas’ construction, I developed resilience, strength, and especially endurance. I hope that this peaceful, repetitive, and beautifully delicate pattern can bring you the same healing energy that I felt while working on it.
